A Dog Walk - 07-01-18
Photographers Research - James Ravillious
The three images above show some of James Ravillious' work. I tried to display some of the ones where there are animals or a field-like scene as this is what my shoot is based around. Shoot 10 mainly focuses on my Dad taking my Dog for a walk across the fields where we live. The photographs above show the connection between animals and humans, their tentative nature whereby they follow their owner (whom they trust). I have tried to show this idea in my work whilst also complementing the landscape around us.

Images that require improvement
This is the first image that I believe requires improvement, as you can tell there is a lack of detail in the image due to the underexposure. I think this is due to the fact that firstly, I was looking up at the sky when taking this photograph therefore it made the contrast very harsh. Secondly, I wasn't using a tripod throughout this shoot as I was moving around a lot and wouldn't have been able to get this angle with one. Therefore I couldn't use a long shutter speed to achieve the right exposure without it resulting in a lot of blur.
This is the second image that I believe requires improvement as there is slight blur at the side. As previously mentioned the haute of the shoot meant that I was moving around a lot on a very muddy terrain, therefore a tripod wouldn't be appropriate. However when taking this image it was a slightly shaded area therefore needed a slightly longer shutter speed that I couldn't use without getting the slight blur from the movement of my Mum and Dad.
AO1 - Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.
The inspiration for this shoot again was James Ravillious, his natural landscape incorporating people intrigues me massively. I find his work very interesting and like seeing a story (shown by people) within the image. Therefore, that is what I continued to do in this shoot. I decided to use my Mum, Dad and Dog to demonstrate the story of taking him for a walk in the winter (when its very muddy) whilst also concentrating on how the landscape around them is displayed.
AO2 - Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing ad refining ideas as work develops.
As mentioned above I didn't use a tripod for this shoot due to the fact that I didn't have enough time between frames to set it up as what I was photographing was active and always on the move. Therefore, I decided to not use one an to instead set my camera to shutter priority in order to get the right exposure without having to worry about missing a shot. When setting my camera to shutter priory I used ISO200 and F18 in order to increase the amount of light but also to keep the detail that I wanted to pick up.
I found that when reviewing this shoot quite a few of my images were underexposed, this I believe is due to the constant changing of lighting I was going through. However, as I shot in raw, as NEF files, I was able to change this exposure in Photoshop without loosing any of the detail that I really wanted to keep. There wasn't much editing involved in these mages as I liked the contrast and balance they display in the first place. The main aspect I changed was the exposure and subsequently the saturation.
AO3 - Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting on work and progress.
My intentions for this shoot were to include my Dad and my dog, showing them on a walk during winter. I wanted to record the symbols that show the cold season, for example the warm clothing my Dad was wearing, the muddy and icy puddles and the mud covering the dog. I believe these symbols tell a story within the landscape which is the basis of my photographs. This is similar to what James Ravillious does in his work, some of his work that I have put at the top of this document show men with their dogs, the connection that people have to their animals. I hope that I have managed to show this within my work with the tentative nature in which my dog watches my Dad when we take him out for a walk.
AO4 - Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
I believe that the shoot I have just achieved shows the style I have adopted throughout this project. I really enjoy documenting people within the landscape showing the connection the have to it but also telling the story of what they are doing. I think this shoot shows my ability to shoot from different perspectives due o the fact I wasn't using a tripod.
